Fall 2006 Conference!

Please click here for information on the Fall 2006 conference sponsored jointly with DMHCA.

DCA/DMHCA meeting for general membership and students was a success!

On Wednesday night, November 2, 2005 DCA and DMHCA joined together to hold a meeting that concentrated on the needs of graduate students. Over 20 students and members attended, and the DCA and DMHCA Boards received some excellent suggestions about programs and activities specifically oriented toward graduate students and new graduates entering the field.

DCA held a Board of Directors meeting on 10/14/05 and 11/11/05. For the minutes to the October meeting, click here. For the minutes to the November meeting, click here.

Notice: from the Delaware Eating Disorders Education and Prevention Committee

The Delaware Eating Disorders Education and Prevention Committee wants your input and (hopefully) your support. We are a group of clinicians, parents, educators, and clients who have joined forces to educate Delawareans about eating disorders. Each year we sponsor at least one major event. We also teach elementary school children about body image and cultural attitudes about one's appearance.

We have just started planning for our 2005-06 season, and we're looking into the possibility of offering a workshop to clinicians on eating disorder assessment, latest research, and treatment. We are considering two tracks: basic and intermediate. Before we undertake such a big project, we're wondering if you would attend this workshop. CEUs would be awarded. The speakers would be experts in the field from the tri-state area.

We are always looking for volunteers, too. All you need is your interest in helping to foster awareness of eating disorders in Delaware (and an hour or two each month).

Please contact Anita O'Donnell at 302-368-8870 to let her know about your interest in the workshop or to inquire about volunteering. Thanks for your support!

From Steering Committee Chair Steve Eichel:

Seems like a sizable majority of members who answered my earlier email prefer a Wednesday meeting. And so, here's the plan:

Date: Wed., 8/10/05
Time: 6 p.m. - 7:30 or 8 p.m.
Place: Graduate Center, Wilmington University (New Castle)

DCA will pay for pizza and softdrinks, so come with your appetite as well as your ideas. I'll be posting an agenda within a week or two. Please let me know (steve@dreichel.com) if you will be able to attend. This will be a very important meeting, so please make an effort to attend!

May 12, 2005

The April 15 meeting of the DCA has come and gone. Attendance was significantly lower this time. We did not have a quorum to make any "real" decisions, so most of the agenda has been postponed for the next summer. It has been decided that the next meeting will either be in the evening or on a Saturday to better accomodate busy schedules. Steve Eichel will send an email to the membership asking for suggestions, and/or a choice of dates. The location of the next meeting (New Castle or Dover) will depend on who commits to attending. (Where were you SoCal Delawarians on 4/15?!?!?)

The good news is that, in conjunction with the Delaware Mental Health Counselors Association, we will be planning a Fall one-day conference. We have a space available in Rehobeth Beach, with other spaces possible depending on the number of counselors who initially sign up. We promise the cost will be very reasonable, and NBCC credits will be given. (NBCC credits are accepted by the Delaware Board of Professional Counselors of Mental Health and Chemical Dependency Professionals.) Check back for more information!

March 14, 2005

The next meeting of the DCA will be held in conjuntion with the Delaware Mental Health Counselors Association (DMHCA), on Friday, April 15, 2005 at 3:30 p.m. at the Dover campus of Wilmington University. Please mark your calendar and please attend! For directions, click here.

March 4, 2005

The first meeting of the reconstituted Delaware Counseling Association was highly productive. Please click here to read the minutes or click here to download a copy in rtf format (readable by Word and most other word processors).

February 22, 2005

The first meeting of the reconstituted Delaware Counseling Association will be held on Friday, March 4, 2005 at Wilmington University's Wilson Graduate Center in New Castle. The meeting will begin at 3:00 p.m. and run no later than 5:00 p.m. Click here for directions.

February 9, 2005

The first meeting of the reconstituted Delaware Counseling Association is set! We will meet on Friday afternoon, March 4, 2005 at Wilmington University, either at the main campus or in the Graduate Center (both in New Castle). The exact location and time will be announced shortly. Please mark your calendars!

Note: Our intention is to alternate meetings between downstate and upstate locations. Right now, about 2/3 of the DCA membership is from New Castle county, which is why we are initially meeting upstate. I apologize for that...and although I know it's a long trek (I recently attended meetings in Dover and Georgetown, so really I know) I am nevertheless hopeful that we will get a sizable downstate turnout. This first meeting will be an important one, so if at all possible, please attend.

DCA now has 54 officially registered members...we are on our way!

January 13, 2005

DCA is now 50 members strong. Time for our first meeting! I am making arrangements through Wilmington University for a meeting room in either the New Castle or Dover campus. (New Castle is the best bet since 60% of the current membership listed an address in New Castle county.) Our first meeting will most likely be for about 2 hours on a Friday afternoon, starting at 2:30 or 3:00 p.m. February 18 or March 4 are likely dates. Check this website in a week or two for a definitive date, time and meeting location.

While you're waiting for DCA to begin to meet, mark Friday, January 28 on your calendar. That's when the second meeting of the newly-reconstituted Delaware Mental Health Counselors Association (DMHCA) will be held, at Wilmington University's Dover campus starting at 2:30 p.m. For more information about DMHCA, contact Bruce Palmer at bruceepalmer@comcast.net.

January 5, 2005

The number of Delaware ACA members that have joined DCA has now grown to over 40!

Dec. 16, 2004

[The following email was sent to Delaware ACA members who recently submitted their DCA membership applications.]

Hello Delaware counselor!

Thank you for joining the reconstituted Delaware Counseling Association. Any effort like this takes time, energy, people and money. Believe it not, the money we already have! Not much, but the old DCA bank account is still intact. So what we need now are people with a little bit of time and energy. (Not a problem since we all have lots of time and energy on our hands thanks to our cushy desk jobs, right?)

Whatever time and energy you can offer we will gladly take, whether it's an hour a year or two hours a day. Reviving a dormant organization always takes a strong initial push. In early 2005 (January or February) we will have our first organizational meeting, and developing a leadership structure will be high up on our list. Fortunately, we will not be starting from scratch. As mentioned, we still have some money. In addition, DCA has been and remains an NBCC-approved provider of continuing education programs. That means that we can sponsor meetings and workshops that will provide CEs necessary for relicensure in Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

I've already heard from a number of new members who are ready and willing to help in rebuilding DCA, and I look forward to meeting and working with you.

As some or perhaps all of you know, DCA already has a fledgling website, which can be accessed at http://www.decounseling.org. Please visit this site and bookmark it, and check it periodically. My intention will be to post information and news on the DCA website as soon as possible. Our website should become a primary means of obtaining information quickly and efficiently.

Finally, for those of you who may not be aware of this, the Delaware chapter of the American Mental Health Counselors Association, DMHCA, has also reformed. They have had one meeting (in New Castle) and will be meeting again on January 28, in Dover. DCA supports the rebirth of our sister association, and we urge anyone who is licensed as or otherwise identifies themselves as mental health counselors and/or are licensed as an LPCMH to join and become active in this organization. If you are interested in DMHCA, please email me (email address below) and I will forward your name and email address to the appropriate DMHCA contact person.

It is my pleasure to be involved in this important endeavor, and I want to thank the Community Counseling program at Wilmington University for encouraging and supporting my efforts. I wish you a safe, enjoyable and rewarding holiday season, and I look forward to meeting you in the new year.

Yours,
Steve

Minutes from the March 4, 2005 meeting of the DCA
Wilmington University Wilson Graduate Center, New Castle

The Delaware Counseling Association had its first meeting on Friday, March 5, 2005, and the general consensus was that it was a highly productive meeting. The following individuals, who now constitute the DCA Steering Committee (see below) attended:

Pat Ramone, Program Chair, MEC program, Wilmington University
Craig Williams, Program Chair, MSCC program, Wilmington University
Lois Grande, Program Assistant, MSCC program, Wilmington University
Joseph Grande, Psychologist
James Walsh, Program Co-Chair, MSCC program, Wilmington University (Dover)
Bruce Palmer, President, DMHCA
Gerri Ryerson, Graduate student, MSCC program, Wilmington University
Mary Soligo, Graduate student, MSCC program, Wilmington University
James Villareal, Professor, Delaware Technical College
Taylor Urban, School Counselor
Steve Eichel, Program Assistant, MSCC program, Wilmington University

After introducing ourselves and setting an agenda, and briefly reviewing the history of professional counseling associations in Delaware, we discussed the agenda for the rest of the meeting. Regarding leadership, it was decided that until elections are held, we would form a Steering Committee with Steve Eichel as Chair. Everyone in attendance volunteered to serve on the Steering Committee, and it was decided that the Steering Committee would expand to include other interested counselors who were not able to attend.

We then turned to membership issues. While not agreeing to a dues structure yet, the following principles were agreed upon: (1) membership would be reasonable; (2) membership would be free to Delaware ACA members until 7/1/05; (3) the Steering Committee would work with the other two professional counseling associations in Delaware (DMHCA and DSCA) to develop a discounted dues structure for counselors who join more than one association; and (4) membership dues for graduate students would be kept at a very reasonable level (probably around $10.00 per year). In fact it was agreed that involving graduate students in DCA would be an important priority.

The following short and long-term goals were discussed:

Short-term goals:

Outreach to counselors
Defining membership criteria
Involving graduate students**
Defining long-term goals
Assisting students to pass the NCE*
Cooperating with DSCA and DMHCA
Taking positions on federal issues
Developing a presence on the internet
Contact ACA and PCA about DCA

Long-term goals:

Advocancy: Legislative, public education**
Mentoring counselors and students for school certification, national certification, licensure*
Portability*
Enhancing professionalism through advanced training and advanced certification
Yearly conference**

Because DCA never formally dissolved (it would be more accurate to describe the association as having been in long-term hibernation), we still have a bank account and NBCC-approved continuing education status. Steve Eichel will contact the former Treasurer of the "old" DCA to determine where our bank account is, and how much is in it. We also need to locate our "old" bylaws, or in its absence, obtain a bylaws "boilerplate" from ACA.

It was noted that the Pennsylvania Counseling Association has been a de facto home to many Delaware counselors. Steve Eichel will contact the PCA to inform them of our renewal, and ask them if they would be willing to notify their Delaware members about our existence.

We discussed the possibility of sponsoring continuing education for counselors in the tristate area. The fact that we are NBCC CE providers means we can sponsor or cosponsor programs that will count toward licensure renewal in Delaware (as well as our neighboring states) should be a selling point.

We also discussed the possibility of linking DCA to the Wilmington University's MSCC and MEC websites (other graduate programs as well?) as one means of promoting the idea that being a committed professional involves being active in your professional associations.

Next meeting: Friday, 4/15/05 in Dover (Wilmington University), simultaneously with DMHCA (with DSCA invited), 3:30 p.m. THEME: ORGANIZATION AND ADVOCACY. Steve will discuss a joint agenda with Bruce Palmer and Pat Ramone.

===============================================
*areas of at least some cooperation with DSCA and DMHCA.
**areas of potentially close cooperation with DSCA and DMHCA.
