The 2010 Conference will be co-sponsored by the Delaware Counseling Association (DCA) and the Delaware Mental Health Counselors Association (DMHCA).

DCA is the official state chapter of the American Counseling Association (ACA).

DMHCA is the official state chapter of the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA).

CE credits for counselors will be provided by the National Board for Certified Counselors. Credits (APA-approved) for psychologists through the American Academy of Counseling Psychology are pending.

Topic: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure: Resilience in childhood & adolescence

Steve K. D. Eichel, Ph.D., ABPP

Dr. Eichel will focus on the genetic, familial and environmental factors that promote resilience in childhood and adolescence. He will pay particular attention to the factors that can be influenced and changed.

Topic: A stitch in time saves nine: Resilience in adulthood

James Walsh, Ph.D.

Dr. Walsh will focus on resilience in adulthood with an emphasis on the life experiences (including psychotherapy) that can promote and enhance resilience.

Topic: The inner life of the resilient therapist

Bruce Palmer, M.A., LPCMH & R. Craig Williams, Ph.D.
...with special guests

Using a live interview format similar to NPR's "Voices in the Family" with Dr. Dan Gottlieb, Dr. Williams and Mr. Palmer will interview several "surprise guest" therapists about major obstacles in their personal and/or professional lives, how they coped with these experiences, and how they ultimately resulted in enhanced resilience as therapists. Conference attendees will be strongly encouraged to participate with their own questions and perhaps stories. The afternoon presenters will discuss specific strategies for incorporating personal resources and wisdom into professional practice.

Presenter Biographies


Keynote Speaker

James Walsh, Ph.D. is a Pastoral Counselor in private practice and is an assistant professor in the Community Counseling program at Wilmington College where he teaches and provides clinical supervision for intern students. He is a well-known and established presenter/trainer for various addictions-related agencies and organizations in Delaware and across the country. In his private practice, he provides a broad array of counseling services.


Keynote Speaker

Steve K. D. Eichel, Ph.D., ABPP, is a licensed and Board certified counseling psychologist. Before going into full-time practice in Newark, DE, he practiced psychology in Philadelphia for 25 years. He worked in community mental health from 1980-88 and was a family court psychologist from 1988-89. From 1989-94 he was Clinical Director of the St. Francis Homes for Boys in PA and also directed their clinical psychology internship program in association with Widener University. In 2009 the American Academy of Counseling Psychology presented him with the James Cossé Distinguished Service Award for Contribution to Professional Practice in Counseling Psychology.


Presenter

Bruce Palmer, M.A., LPCMH is a Licensed Professional Counselor of Mental Health with a Masters Degree in Psychology, Nationally Board Certified and in practice over 30 years. He has been past president and founding member of the Delaware Mental Health Counselors Association, and a member of the American Mental Health Counselor's Ethics Committee. Bruce is in private practice through Full Circle Services providing individual, couple and group therapy as well as leadership for a number of workshops and seminars. Initially Bruce worked with the Delaware Division of Mental Health as an administrator/therapist at the Wilmington outpatient clinics followed by his affiliation with Tressler Centers of Delaware in 1977. Bruce integrates Embodied Gestalt techniques, Jungian concepts, dream work and imagery with traditional therapeutic modalities in working with clients with diverse psychological issues.

R. Craig Williams, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in part-time private practice. Full-time, he is the Coordinator of the MS in Community Counseling program at Wilmington University where he also teaches group counseling and supervises practicum and internship students. Dr. Williams has worked in a variety of academic and community mental health organizations, and provided crisis mental health and consultation services in New York City following 9/11.

CEUs

This conference is approved for seven (7) Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by the Delaware Counseling Association and Delaware Mental Health Counselors Assocation.

The Delaware Counseling Association and Delaware Mental Health Counselors Assocation are approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. (NBCC) to offer continuing education credits for professional counselors and counselor educators. DCA and DMHCA maintain responsibility for this program.

NBCC-approved CEUs are accepted as partial fulfilment of continuing education requirements for Delaware-licensed professional counselors of mental health and psychologists.

We have applied for seven (7) Continuing Education Units (CEUs) with the Delaware LCSW Board (approval pending)
