2008 Spring Conference &
Workshop
Sexuality
Counseling: Ten Things Your
Graduate School Never Taught You
Sexuality
aspects of clients' lives are
affected when they experience
relationship problems and
relationships are affected when
sexuality issues are ignored.
Sexuality is a prominent factor
in the healthy functioning of
individuals and relationships,
but is often not addressed in
detail in graduate training
programs. Thus, the Joint
Conference Committee has chosen
Sexuality Counseling: The 10
Things Your Grad School Never
Told You as the theme for the
2008 Joint Conference. This
full-day conference offers 2
half-day workshops by a
distinguished group of presenters
(featuring world-renown sex
therapy expert Dr. Barry
McCarthy) addressing a variety of
topics related to sexuality
issues in counseling.
The
2008 Spring Conference will be
held on Saturday, April 5, 2008
at the New Castle campus of
Wilmington University.
The
program is open to professionals
in the behavioral health field
including direct care providers
and their supervisors, and anyone
interested in learning more about
treatment options for sexual
disorders.

WORKSHOP
AGENDA
April 5, 2008
8:30 a.m. -- Arrival and
Check-in
9:00 a.m. -- Featured
Presentation
Integrating Sexual
Interventions in Couple
Counseling
Dr. Barry McCarthy
Traditionally,
marriage therapy dealt with
sexual problems indirectly,
assuming that sexual problems
were a symptom of an underlying
relationship problem such as poor
communication, power struggles,
family of origin conflicts, a
history of trauma, or an
individual's "secret". Typically,
couple therapy and sex therapy
were separate domains with little
overlap. This workshop presents a
comprehensive, integrated
approach to dealing with couples
where intimacy and sexuality are
an integral component of
individual and couple assessment,
treatment, and relapse
prevention. The proposed model
presents a "both-and" approach to
treating individual and couple
problems with a special emphasis
on the most common sexual issue -
inhibited sexual desire. This
workshop will address sexual
issues in both married and
non-married couples as well as
work with single people. Among
the topics covered will be the
role of sex in the couple
relationship, illness and
medications, compulsive sexual
behavior and secret sexual lives,
extramarital relationships, sex
and aging, use and misuse of
erectile medications, and
maintaining healthy couple
sexuality.
12:15 p.m. -- Speaker to be
Announced (Lunch Provided)
1:15 p.m. -- Special Topics
Presentations
Sexuality: Variances in
Behavior - An In Depth Look
Dr. Deborah Laino
This workshop
will explore various types of
sexual behavior and discuss the
concept of "normalcy" in those
behaviors. LGBT, as well as other
types of human sexual behaviors
will be explored. Discussion will
be focused on desensitizing
individuals to what was
previously thought of as
"abnormal." New insights will be
uncovered into our own and
others' sexual
behavior.
OR
Self Awareness:
Transference and
Counter-transference Issues in
Counseling Sexuality Issues
Dr. R. Craig Williams
Clients have
the potential to "transfer"
intimate feelings and desires for
gratification onto their
counselors, especially when
addressing sexuality related
issues (e.g. problems with sexual
desire/ performance, sexual
variations, sexual traumas,
etc.). Counselors are not immune
to similar responses to clients.
Such transference events offer
potential for therapeutic growth
if addressed appropriately. This
workshop is a brief overview of
transference/counter-transference
phenomenon related to sexuality
and sexuality issues, accompanied
by the opportunity for
participants to explore and
discuss issues experienced in
their own counseling
practice.
